The Lyrics

Loose Wheel

On a road in Toledo, across from the depot
I was cruising in my old heap.
It wasn't good lookin'
But I was sure bookin'
And anyway I got it dirt cheap.
Me and my old lady
Were cruising 'bout 80
When the car really started to roar
Round the curve we were turnin', and something was burnin'
But I shoved that old gas pedal down to the floor

In the mirror I saw something cruise down the highway
I thought how it looked out of place
It was my tire, going like fire
I had a strange look on my face
I really don't know but, it looked like a donut
For a minute I thought I was dead
I started crying, I thought we were dying
I looked out the windshield and said

You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel
With four old bald tires, you were such a good deal
I've had some clunkers, some really bad junkers
But you were just a great steal
You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel

After the collision, I made a decision
I thought how I'd lived through it all
In the glow of the headlights, I checked out the damage
You really couldn't see much at all
I started thinking, I'm glad I'm not drinking
And these words came back time after time

You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel
With 4 old bald tires, you were such a good deal
I've had some clunkers, some really bad junkers
But you were just a great steal
You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel

Very good execution on internal rhyme, pace, flow and humor. I'll add a fifth wheel to this song in the voting column. Good job!

I was working on this same idea, but I didn't finish it. You solved the problem I couldn't. Good job!

I agree--good parody.

You took an old country music joke and made the DEFINITIVE parody for the song. Pinkard & Bowden or Homer & Jethro would be proud! LOL--555!.

If we ever meet, we're taking you to whatever passes for a redneck bar in that town and I'm going to play while you sing this.

Well done, but I believe the title and idea to be copied. The BBC had a comedy sketch with this parady on British TV in the fall of 1986. The song was played over TV footage of Nigel Mansell's F1 car blowing a tire near the end of the Adelaide Grand Prix. This was the last race of the season and Nigel's blow out allowed Alain Prost to win world drivers' championship.

Very well done. I heard a trucker sing one of these on TV some years ago, maybe ten or more. His version had a trucker's orientation. Anybody know how to track it down? Tnx, Bill

I heard another parody, concerning Lucille's bailout timing. The only line I remember:- "You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, they brought in a gusher out in our back field - - - "

Haha, my dad's friend lost a wheel of the trailer which he didn't know, and dad happened to be going passed at that time and saw a 'magic' wheel rolling through the paddock. Wasn't til the next day when having a couple of beers that dad mentioned to his friends at what happened expecting to be laughed at. But the friend that lost the wheel was there and it was such a coincidence. Anyway we had our annual fishing competition on and my dad organised for another friend to get up and sing "It's a fine time to leave me loose wheel" Will never ever forget it my whole life :)

Alternate chorus - you picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel, stripped all my lug nuts ended up in a field, I've had shet happen, but I was a crappin' my pants during this whole ordeal, you picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel.
