Quotes:

Critics don't buy records. They get 'em free.

I may be helping to bring harmony between people through my music.

I'm a musician at heart, I know I'm not really a singer. I couldn't compete with real singers. But I sing because the public buys it..

Mona Lisa? What kind of title is that for a song?

The people who know nothing about music are the ones always talking about it.

Nonsensical Song Lyrics:

"The Christmas Song"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.
Why They're Nonsensical:
Humans are perhaps the only animal species who ever consciously learn how to fly, and in becoming aircraft pilots is when they do so. For other animals that ever learn how to fly, it may not be such a conscious process that calling it "Knowing how to fly" is clearly pertinent. That puts humans in a category of animal species pretty much all by themselves. A second category is animals that ever fly on their own, including most birds, most insects, and most, if not all, bats. A third category of animals for that purpose, is animals that never fly. That last category includes all non-human mammals other than bats. Although some mammals have names seeming to indicate that they can fly, generally that refers to gliding, not true flight. Those include "Flying Lemurs," (which are not true lemurs), and "Flying Squirrels, (which in fact ARE true squirrels), but both of those are gliders, not true fliers. Exceptionally "Flying Foxes" are true fliers, as they are a type of bat, not true foxes. So the non-flying category of non-human mammals other than bats includes reindeer. They probably never imagine an ability to fly, so posing the question of whether they "know" how to fly (or don't know either) has questionable pertinence at best.

Inappropriate Song Lyrics:

"Too Young"
The Inappropriate Lyrics:
And then, someday they may recall

We were not too young at all.
Why They're Inappropriate:
In gereral, I've always liked this song. But in these lines is a case of using a word inaccurately in order to make a rhyme. The whole song generally is about "they" (perhaps the parents of the young lovers) thinking the lovers were too young to know the meaning of love. In these lines, the singer contemplates that maybe someday "they" will finally recognize or acknowledge (for the first time) that the lovers in question really weren't too young. Trouble is, that isn't what "recall" means. "Recall" means to recollect something that one was previously aware of, not to recognize or acknowledge something for the first time.

Dated Song Lyrics:

"Route 66"
The Dated Lyrics:
Get your kicks on Route 66.
Why They're Dated:
No doubt the most fabled highway route in U.S. History, U.S. Route 66 stretched from Chicago to Los Angeles. But now U.S. 66 per se no longer exists, nor does any other single route number traverse the same legendary route. To travel the same general corridor on today's modern highways means following Interstate 55 from Chicago to St. Louis, then Interstate 44 from St. Louis to Oklahoma City, then Interstate 40 from there to Barstow, California, then Interstate 15 and/or 215 from there to San Bernardino or Ontario, and finally Interstate 10 from there on to Los Angeles. That combination of routes could scarcely be the basis ot a similarly catchy song!
