The Lyrics

A lot of songs these days are, as Todd In The Shadows put it, "club dance songs about dancing in the club to club dance songs" and it's all this pop-dance-R&B-techno melding that just blends into each other. Great for mashups, but not for music-lovers...
If you could hear the songs now, buddy
Most of them suck, a lack of creative control
Execs always pour artists into one
Bland mould, won't differ
Nameless joes
All sound the same
Wish they'd go broke, broke, broke, broke, broke

They sound, sound, sound, sound, sound
The same, same, same
Same sound, sound, sound, sound, sound
This synth-pop shit, it's getting old

I do not blame the artists, buddy
They're not who I burn
They had potential, cash well-spent
Music was tight, lyrics were sweet, what happened?
Poor guys got screwed by marketing
"This sound is pop'lar
You'll play this, not your thing"

And now they sound, sound, sound, sound, sound
The same, same, same
Sound, sound, sound, sound, sound
R&B-dance, it's getting old now

And now I always worry
For good ones like Adele
She'll soon fall under
The same old "kill uniqueness" spell
I know soon it will take hold
On guys like Gotye
They'll sound the same
No-one can tell the diff

Into the mould, they'll fit
And then they'll sound, sound, sound, sound, sound
The same, same, same
Sound, sound, sound, sound, sound
This pop-dance shit, it's getting old

They'll sound, sound, sound, sound, sound
The same, same, same
Same sound, sound, sound, sound, sound
This synth-dance shit, it's getting old

The same damn beat
Seems to me
They will be
Dead to me
Same style, I see
Same drum beat
Synth type 3
The future's bleak

For the music geeks
Thank God I don't listen to the radio, or I might actually hold the opinions in this song (to a higher degree, anyway)

A nice little editorial. There was an American journalist named Andy Rooney who was most famed for his little wry commentary on things that were on his mind in the last 3 minutes of the 60 Minutes news program. He often would start, "Didja ever notice how....?" and end with, "I hate that!" Your parody (and a few others of yours) reminds me of that.

I parodied this song for my Weird Al Project a little while back and I was surprised that this song hasn't been parodied that much. I'm glad your awesome little number can join in.

Artistry - A GREAT REM song, and I totally agree...

REM Artistry: Conq: Re Agri's comment - call me Andy Rooney then, cos I couldn't agree with the sentiments contained any more than 100%. Good work here!

(artistry) I remember writing a long diatribe on this exact subject in my journal. In 1977. Same old schlock, different decade. ;)

Hopefully the trend of artists pursuing independent methods of distribution will continue, and the "experts" at the big labels won't have anyone to "guide". Marvelous commentary here.

I agree and disagree at the same time. . .I kinda of enjoy the dance music, though I certainly hear many songs that sound similar on the radio. . .
