The Lyrics

This mystery aircraft was made from a He-280 jet fighter airframe but with a 3000+ hp DB 604 X-Engine as seen in the photos below. The He-280 jet fighter was rejected by Goering and the RLM in favor of Messerschmitt's Me-262. The He-279 Spirale (Spiral) was an experimental fighter with a massive engine and claimed speed of 560 mph which would have made it not only faster than the jet Me-262 but also the fastest fighter in the world. One unarmed version was sent to Rechlin for testing but then it just disappeared. It was never captured by anyone so the Germans most likely destroyed it. For the time it was incredible, especially the large prop spinner with 4 blades. I wonder how the P-51 and Spits would have reacted to this machine!!!
He Spirale was new
He-279

He-280 variant flew
Piston flyin’
X-engine flyin’

Heinkel couldn’t stand it
Airframe lyin’ ‘round
Goering forbid another
Until the DB 604 was found

He Spirale was new
He-279
Strange find

They built you
They built you
They built you
Heinkel got annoyed
560 mph
Built in urgency
At Rechlin it was destroyed

Mystery
He Spirale was new
He-279
(Heinkel’s forbidden fighter would have been deadly)

WHY was this not picked up by the Nazis to use against the Allies???

One fast-looking airplane, but the wings seem a bit thin for mounting much in the way of weapons.

DC, b/c we do not know the timeframe of that airframe or even which one it was! Although it came from the early war He-280 program with that engine, by '42 the DB 604 was cancelled and so maybe that prototype took 2-3 years to build and test which would make it a single prototype with no production capability at Heinkel at all. Patrick, AFAIK an a/c like that would have mounted a 30mm nose gun and probaly two wing root guns. The He-280 was originally to mount 3x 20mm MG-151/20s so Heinkel probably did not count on heavier weapons for the wing or any strike role at all. It would have been an incredibly fast interceptor and fighter.
