The Lyrics

The Fl-282 Kolibri (Hummingbird) was the first production helicopter of WW2 and one of two that played a significant part (the other being the Fa-223 Drache). In 1942, the Fl-282 was deployed with the Kriegsmarine to patrol the Aegean Sea and was later used with a varity of Kriegsmarine ships, acting as spotter. It also was used in land-based roles as transport and liaison helo. Plans for mass production were high but unfortunately Flettner was bombed and most of the machines in production were lost. About two dozen actually flew, but were operational. The Allies captured several and the Germans had planned armed versions, even a gunship!!!
The Fl-282
served just fine

Kolibri was something new
Navy spyin’
And liaison flyin’

Kriegsmarine bandit
Rotors spinin’ ‘round
Speed of 93 mph
Range, 200 miles, then she set down

The Fl-282
served just fine
‘til ‘45

New helo
New helo
New helo
Produced in WW2
Eyes in the air
Spotter flyin’ free
Germans had few

For Navy
The Fl-282
served just fine
(and LuftTransportstaffel 40)

Didn't the United States also have a helicopter operating before the war ended?

Saw a German helicopter in an old photo album from WWII or just before. Looked like it might have been tethered to the ship. I once saw another photo of a snow vehicle with skis and a pusher style propeller. Nazi marked, though it could have been of some other origin, the Germans used a lot of captured material. Any idea what that might be?

The German tethered craft was the Fa-330 Bachstelze autogyro and the snow vehicle was a captured Russian Aerosan in German markings. Germans also had a snow-screw vehicle.Fa-330: http://robroy.dyndns.info/targetkites/Fa-330/FA-330-title.jpg Russian Aerosan: http://www.strangevehicles.greyfalcon.us/oddpics/airsl.png http://www.strangevehicles.greyfalcon.us/oddpics/airs2.png German snow-screw vehicle: http://strangevehicles.greyfalcon.us/pictured/rae1.jpg

DC, yes the US had the Sikorsky R-4 operational from 1944-45. It is often quoted as the first mass-produced helo in the world but technically that is false. The Fl-282 was in production and operational from 1942. While only a small number actually were built, it was only due to the fact of the production facility being bombed that did not allow Germany to mass-produce it. Orders were placed for thousands of them. Anyway, the Germans had two helos and one autogyro operational in WW2 plus invented things like the backpack helo and portable helo.
