The Lyrics

A tribute to Judy Garland
Some sing "Over The Rainbow"
Off key, high
No one does it like Judy
Sweet, like a lullabye

Many versions of "Rainbow"
They don't fly
This song will always be Hers
No matter how they try..

She moved a crowd,
And touched the fans
With pleading gestures of her hands,
...Like praying
Her song should just be put aside
Not ever sung, not ever tried
...Forever staying....

Somewhere over the rainbow
(Where) She still sings..
Angels join in the chorus
Backed up with smooth lush strings

She moved a crowd,
And touched the fans
With pleading gestures of her hands,
...Like praying
Let this great song be put aside
No longer sung, or even tried,
...Forever staying....

Somewhere over the rainbow
Judy sings..
Angels join in the chorus
Adding their lush harp strings..

The greatest tribute we could give
Let her song die, her mem'ry live
Above..the..rainbow...high

Nice tribute.

Beautifully done, Airfarce, and for that you get 15 altogether, despite that NOBODY, not even Judy -- maybe even especially not Judy -- can drain the sap from the original. But a) that's only my my personal feeling re the original and b) there are lots of worse songs --SInatra's "It Was A Very Good Year" comes to mind. :-)

My wife's currently playing in the orchestra for a stage production of WOZ. She'll like this, as do I.

Thanks, Meri, Stan...sure, it''s schmaltzy, but it reflects the time period, and quite fitting for the mood of the classic movie..and thanks, John, and alvin

But does Rufus Wainwright give it any justice? Just curious...555

555 for a great tribute to an acclaimed 'torch singer' that gave so much toward american music.

I agree with the sentiment, Air. To Sam Harris, Kat McPhee and whoever else butchers this song: ther will only be one Judy Garland.
Peregrin - January 16, 2008 - Report this comment
I enjoyed too!

Thanks, Ag...not familiar with Ruf. Wainwright, is he a singer?.......2Eag:..Yes, actually, she was my first movie love, not in "OZ"...but, in "Meet Me In St. Louis"..thanks, LCC..she did that...and thanks, SOTM..I totally agree...and thanks, Peregrin

AFW: Rufus Wainwright is a talented singer-songwriter who melds folk, rock, jazz, and the "Broadway sound" in very personal songs that often examine his homosexual lifestyle. He's gotten into a Judy Garland covers kick on-stage and in recordings lately, and here's a fine Youtube performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrnT2VEsuHc&feature=related

Nice parody, though I don't agree that this song shouldnt ever be covered. Ive just never been a fan of the whole "any covers of (so and so song) suck!" mindset. but regardless, this is pretty good.

Thank you again for something I can sing to my grandmother.

Looked at this again . . . My Mother always loved her "Happiness is a Thing Called Joe" . And she had the most expressive brown eyes!
