Because it's "based on the performance by..." and the first (well, the only) recording I could find was Ella Fitzgerald's. But thanks, anyway.

Ash, I'm glad you're not offended... I'd hate to think I'd caused offence (unintentionally, that is). I was rather in two minds how to write this one, and ended up mixing the two threads - if it seems rather confused, that's because the author was when he wrote it.

Just sampled this 'oldie but goodie', after completing my own reworking of it, which I hope will appear in Monday's list. It's a rather obvious switch but very tastefully handled considering the subject matter. I especially liked the way you seamlessly wove the two threads, animal weft and human warp for a rich fabric. The 'Loaded Weapon' ref was also a nice touch. Good to have one of those when beaver is in the offing, no? This parody deserved a lot more attention and praise, so here's some. Dk Ella's version but I know I can trust your pacing.
As 'Peggy Lee' has posthumously pointed out, hers is THE version (rec.1956) and its smouldering bass'n'drum suggestiveness has never been surpassed imo. According to Miss Lee's bio on Wiki, the song was written by Eddie Cooley and John Davenport and first recorded by Little Willie John. Miss Lee (I never presume to call her Peggy) added two uncopyrighted verses of her own, the ones beginning 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Captain Smith and Pocohontas'.
She was an estimable lyricist in her own right - credits include 'We are Siamese if you please' (voicing also) from Disney's 'Lady and the Tramp', 'It's a Good Day', 'Johnny Guitar' and a final (1969) late hit with the alcoholic lament 'Is that all there is'. But to see her at her best, you need to check out her live, early 40s appearances with the Benny Goodman Orchestra. She just oozed it. As Elton would say, 'I would have liked to know you ...' but I wasn't even a kid back then.
