"Deck The Halls (With Gasoline)"

Parody Written by:

Dylan Baranski

The Lyrics

As I've said before, this seems to be a time when people write more Christmas parodies. Naturally, I decided to go with the flow. Back when I was in elementary school, some kids used to sing this, so I elaborated a bit & made this parody. Merry Christmas! hyvää joulua! god jul! メリークリスマス!
Deck the halls with gasoline.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Light a match & watch it gleam.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Now your school is down in ashes.
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Aren't you glad you played with matches?
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Deck the halls with dynamite.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Press the plunger, see the lights.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Now your school's a bunch of rubble.
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Aren't you glad you stirred up trouble?
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Oh yes! A parody where my vote will be perfectly appropriate!

"Back when I was in elementary school, some kids used to sing this..."; same here. Taking another's work and posting it as your own in not a good thing, but I'll stop short of calling your parody half-plagiarised since a) there probably isn't a copyright on the DTH(WG) part and b) you acknowledged that you are not the original author of half this parody. I will say though that this song is three verses long, not two. If I were to rate you on the 1/3 of the song that you wrote, it would be a 222 at best, so I'm not voting here. Better luck next time.
Dylan Baranski - December 13, 2006 - Report this comment
Whaddaya mean plagiarized? This was a partial parody of a Christmas song that elementary school kids would sometimes sing, & had no definite origin. So, I don't really think it's "plagiarized" since it has no definite origin & because I elaborated a bit. (btw, I've always known Deck the Halls to have two verses. I'm not sure about that 3rd one).
Immoral Liberal - December 13, 2006 - Report this comment
Just because the author of something can't be traced doesn't mean that a work is not plagiarized. As my college professors used to say, if you heard it someplace else and don't remember where, footnote it that way. Isn't it better (and more challenging) to come up with your own ideas? I've never heard this before. However, if it has existed in some close form then I think the author should withdraw this or it should be taken down. Hey Red, plagiarism is not determined by whether or not something has been copyighted. One owns what they produce once a work is produced. Copyrighting gives you the added protection of not having to prove ownership, sets damages, etc.
Agrimorfee - December 13, 2006 - Report this comment
All you say is true, but Red did say, " I'll stop short of calling your parody half-plagiarised...".
Immoral Liberal - December 13, 2006 - Report this comment
Agrim - you are correct and Red seems like an intelligent person. Red "stopped short of calling [your] parody half-plagiarised since a) there probably isn't a copyright" - copyright or not, it could still be plagiarism. There is an author (or several) on this site who can tell you that. I read where Robert J. Pagliaro had a parody plagiarized (copyright infringement) on a work that was not copyrighted. Nothing against you and nothing against Red here.

OMG!!! you are soooooooo famous at my school! someone heard someone sing your song and probally looked it up and sang it to his/her friends and passed it on. It kept up until it came to me, in other words, thank you for making up this song if you hadn't then i would have never known that Christmas didn't have to be so sourious (Sp?) and could be very funny!
Dylan Baranski - December 12, 2007 - Report this comment
Well, technically, the first half I ripped off from hearing my fellow classmates sing it. The second half is my own doing.
Moonbow - December 22, 2007 - Report this comment
Lol I heard my friends sing this in Elementary too.. but not the second part. A third verse? I don't think so..

Actually, though I have no proof, I am the author of the first stanza, but I wrote "watch the school go down in ashes". This would have been written in the mid-80s in Indiana when visiting my cousins house. Glad to see it inspired many variations.
Andrea - November 18, 2010 - Report this comment
Fugacity - I think I can corroborate your story. I remember one of my classmates telling some of us one day at school about writing the lyrics and teaching them to us. This would have been about 1985 in Indianapolis.

The parody of Deck The Halls is old as dirt, as I'm 35 now, and I was singing it in Elementary school. Same with Jingle Bells: Jingle Bells, Batman smells, etc. The best part of the Jingle Bells parody is when Batman is floating down the Delaware, chewing his underwear, and so forth. It then goes into Great green globs of greasey, grimey golpher guts...catch my drift?

I know many might find the parody funny but I myself do not in the least. In light of the many school shootings lately and tragic loss of life I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way. I’m sure those who’ve lost their children and loved ones take offense even if it’s about burning down or bombing a school. This is very inappropriate in nature. I love parodies but certain things don’t belong as part of them
@Anon - November 29, 2018 - Report this comment
This parody is older than my deceased grandpa and has nothing to do with school shootings. Chillax.

Anonymous, I am no more in favor of school shootings than you are. I happen to know about the tragedy that was the Bath School Disaster. However, I did not do this one for the purpose of glorifying the death of innocent people. It was only meant in jest.

I think I wrote this in 1985 or 86 at Nathaniel Hawthorn intermediate school in bayside New York. But the second verse is “watch the Schoolhouse burn to ashes”
