I grew up in a steely town
noise of mill was my lullaby - in my Steeltown
Oh, I hated and I loved the grand black mill
which brought us bread to stomachs fill
I couldn't believe it one day would just stand still -

My daddy was an engineer and mamma worked as clerk
I planned to follow his career, not be a pooter jerk
but the nineties, oh they hit so hard my town where I lived, the Steeltown -
I guess I never more will see the molten steel to glow -
I guess I never get to check the heat of Cowper stove
for those twentyone years which I used to grow up in Steeltown

i went studying in HUT
the stuff I read was chemistry - oh, Steeltown!
Now one summer I had planned to work back home
I get to hear that mill was done -
Two thousand jobs, with one strike they had gone...

Now I am just an engineer and not economist
but everyone in my hometown they held a-clench-ed fist
the spirit, it had been struck down, so down in Steeltown
Those tie-suit clowns (who couldn't tell what is the difference
between IBM and I-beam), they had no common sense
they ruined two thousand jobs with one draw of pen in Steeltown

I worked as goldsmith for some years
I shed a cubic meter of tears - for my dear Steeltown!
My daddy works now in mini-mill
me in IT, to pay my bills
- I never got my chance to work in world of steel

Now I hate the stuff I'm doing but it's paying me fairly well
though metallurgy plants inside they may look just like Hell
like tapping pig iron off blast furnace back then in Steeltown
Two thousand degrees Centigrade is 'nough to melt the steel
I don't know if it's hot enough describe the way I feel
Now I've got to get used to not calling that town as Steeltown
