I was skeptical at first because I couldn't remember exactly how the sond went. But I listened to the recording.... if I could give you s 6 for pacing, I would, not because its exact but you managed to fit a tricly theme. This is great. 5's

Thank you, Leah. What I personally found most challenging was arranging Dustin's movie-names not only so the pacing worked but also so the parody's verses would rhyme....fortunately he's made so many movies, there's a lot of material to work with.

Reminds me of the Christopher Walken song "These are a few of his 93 parts." Except that Hoffman really is a good actor, while Walken looks like he took that advice Hoffman got in "The Graduate," because his acting really looks plastic.

Thanks, MP.

As Benjamin would ask Mrs. Robinson: "Are you trying to write a parody of Dustin Hoffman?" You did, and did a fabulous job. I also remember Ratso Rizzo calling Jon Voight's character a dumb f*****g cowboy in New York.

Thanks, Tim ! And remember - PLASTICS.

The attempt was, I grant you, a valiant one...but it's really off the mark. This is especially true of the beginning. Dust in the Wind is one of my favorite songs. I had to go and find the real lyrics and TRY to match things up...I tried but you failed. Great idea...to try and find a song where you can list all the movies of a famous actor..problem was..you picked the wrong song

Thanks for your in-depth comment, Jude. Your opinion is noted. The pacing of the selected movie-name syllables matches the lyrics of Dust In The Wind not perfectly, but definitely " Lots ", as the rating scale indicates. Your comment proves a point that I occasionally make in my own commentary - no two people experience pacing exactly the same way for the same song - pacing depends on a person's own sense of rhythm, and that is a very individual thing that differs from person to person. You concluded that I picked the wrong song. I concluded that I picked the right song. You and I hear pacing differently - that's all - I am flattered that you took the time to read my parody and then actually do some research into the original lyrics of Dust In The Wind in order to analyze my parody more thoroughly. You didn't have to bother to do all that, and you didn't have to bother to explain your feelings to me - but you did, and I appreciate that very much. Thanks again, and happy holidays!

Good point, Johnny...something I hadn't thought of ' no two people experience pacing exactly the same way for the same song - pacing depends on a person's own sense of rhythm, and that is a very individual thing that differs from person to person....'

John, Your parody really intrigued me...so much so, I went and did my own. I'm so glad that we see things differently. If we all saw parody writing the same way it would never advance. I'm really intrigued by the concept though...kind of a Twelve Days of Christmas/My Favorite Things kind of idea...the idea of listing things. I hope to do one in future...and I don't think I would have thought of it without seeing yours first. I've also gone back and checked the pacing by going over your song with William Tong's instrumental version running. I agree with you...it's not the pacing...the pacing is fine. My parody is called I'm Double-Chinned, please check it out...I'm looking forward to your comments. I'm not that pleased with my effort...I'm really looking for your comments to see where I can fix it.

Thank you, Jude. I would like to read and comment on your parody "I'm Double-Chinned" - but is it posted yet? I didn't see it posted under your name. If I can find it, I will indeed check it out.

(ABC) This is really 'goofey' - but I like goofey! Good job!

(ABC) Goofy indeed! I wonder if you did mange to pop in his enitre filmography in there? High points for sheer simplicity.
Johnny D - May 20, 2004 - Report this comment
Thank you, Agri! I got a lot, but not all, of DH's filmography into this one.

I had a hard time getting started Johnny D, but once I was I enjoyed it, this song deserves more votes!
Johnny D - May 21, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks very much, Peregrin. The pacing and rhyming really do work, although I admit you are quite correct, it takes some initial effort to get one's reading of it synchronized.
neminem - May 21, 2004 - Report this comment
Wow. That was awesome. I had no problem finding the correct rhyme for this one... you get 5s without a doubt. I also thank you because my dad was talking about this song and told me to go download it a while ago, and I never did and then forgot the name of the song. Good song.

Proof of your talent - creative, clever, different. Skimmed the comments - my feeling is that fudging words or altering the pacing can be part of the parody work. The satiric value would be noted and appreciated in an audio version, but could be lost in the written work. I'll also admit to missing the pacing at first. But once you fit it in (and it does work), it actually adds to the overall parody - the (once too overplayed) song is parodied by the change in stress. I have no problem with pacing modifications provided they are consistent throughout the work.
Jeff Reuben - May 21, 2004 - Report this comment
I thought this was very creative. Didn't know Hoffman was in Terror in the Aisles (or just didn't remember). Not the funniest of the D parodies, but very clever work.
Johnny D - May 21, 2004 - Report this comment
Robert J.: Thanks - I'm delighted that you noticed the humorous effect that occurs when the movie titles' syllables are fit into the original song's pacing - to my ears, it mocks the original song's overwrought emotionalism.

Jeff: Thanks....I was trying for "And now for something completely different" here.

Now whenever I hear the original, I'll think "Dust-in Hoff-minn." Which is a good thing. This is a helluva a concept piece, Johnny Dangle. It's increasingly clear to me that you have Obsessive Creativity Disorder.

Thanks, Martha and Mighty Spaff. And Spaff (sorry, you get only 1 "Mighty" per comment - no offense, but I have to save pixels, ya know), thank you for your pseudo-diagnosis . . . I think that's a widespread condition here on Amiright, and I daresay you've got more than a touch of it yourself!
