The Lyrics

There once was a musical band
A heavy metal rock band
They sang the acid hard rock
And the punk songs of our land

They were long on popularity
Folks thought they would go far
But political incompatibility led to their downfall

Well, the one on the right was on the left
And the one in the middle was on the left
And the one on the left was on the left
And the guy in the rear was a moderate.

This musical phenomenon toured the entire planet
Singing the heavy metal
And the punk songs of our land
They performed with great intensity
And soon they were the rage
But political animosity prevailed upon the stage

Well, the one on the right was on the left
And the one in the middle was on the left
And the one on the left was on the left
And the guy in the rear hugged a whole forest!

Well the curtain call had sounded
A hush fell on the crowd
As thousands there were wired to hear
The punk songs of our land
But they took their politics seriously
And that night at the concert hall
As the audience watched nervously
The rockers lost it all!

Well, the one on the right was spewing hate
And the one in the middle was grabbing butts
And the one on the left, he pulled a gun
And the guy in the rear, got arrested.

Now this should be a lesson if you plan to start a rock band
Don't go mixin' politics with the punk songs of our land
Just work on making lotsa noise
Play your electric guitar well
And if you have political convictions keep them to yourself

Now, the one on the left, he owns a bank
And the one in the middle is a CEO
The one on the right's a congressman
And the guy in the rear, has a husband!

Michael, I don't know this Johnny Cash song, but I read your lyrics; very well done; I don't know what band you're talking about, but I'd like to know.

I'm talking about rock bands in general. My guess is Johnny Cash may have talking about a specific band like the Kingston Trio, but I'm not sure about that. -- MM

5s for this alone: "But political animosity prevailed upon the stage."

John, I have to be honest and give credit for that line to Johnny Cash, who wrote the original. This parody was more an attempt to modernize his song and apply it to the present, than an attempt to make fun of it, so I stayed closer to the original than usual. I did change words in several other lines, but not that one. Anyway, the evolution from a diverse folk band to an all-liberal punk-rock band is quite obvious, and that I think is what makes this parody good. I appreciate all the "good grades" I can get, but I cannot take credit for a line I borrowed from the author of the original. -- MM
