my child arrived at my home today
he had some LPs that he wanted to play
and there was "grateful dead" and "dobie gray"
he liked to rock in his father's way
and he was talkin' 'bout the music i loved and knew
he said "i'm gonna be like you dad

and the kid's into "beatles" and the "rascals" too
"little feat's" crew and those men in the "who"
really loves the old bands...from way back when
we played them together then
you know we rocked a long time then

my son walked in just the other day
he thanks for "the wall", dad, c'mon, let's play
could we reach all the notes ?...sorry, not that day
but it was fun to do, beltin' out that way
and we rocked away, cause this style's never dimmed
he said "i'm gonna be real hip, yeah
you know i'm gonna be real hip"

and the kid's into "sabbath" and "the mothers" too
early "guess who" and those ol' "moody blues"
bring 'em to my home, son...we'll let them spin
and we'll groove together, then, son
you know we'll rock a long time then

well, he sought out my knowledge just the other day
so "rush" was a band that i had to play
son, that's "geddy lee"...are ya diggin' his style ?
he nods his head and he begins to smile
what i'd really like, dad, is to borrow your "hollies"
for that matter, all your "bee gees", please

and the kid's into "hendrix" and the "airplane" too
"zeppelin's" blues and ol' "NRBQ"
he's hummin' all the old songs...from start to end
let's hum them together then, son
you know we'll rock a long time then

though long time retired, "the doors" lead the way
we cued some up just the other day
i said "i used to see jim and he'd blow your mind"
he said "you're lucky, dad, livin' in those times"
you see the new music's gutless...what's a "fighter of foo ?"
but it sure is nice rockin' with you, dad
it is sure nice rockin' with you

and the musical tones...that appealed to me
my son sought avidly...enjoyed it rabidly

and the kid's into "clapton" and "the blues magoos"
"velvet U's lou" and that ol' motley crue
wanna rock and roll, son ?...come see your kin
and we'll get together then, son
you know we'll rock a long time then
