The Lyrics

Another loathesome song from old bad-time memories, it's a type of life I cannot understand. I hate the taste of whiskey, and songs like *this* one make me loathe country 'music'. But I *do* like eggs, and I've known friends who've kept chickens. Maybe Hank should have raised some chickens (chooks?) so he'd sing something like this.
I got me a flock o' chickens, and they're clucking all the time,
But sometimes I need to see some eggs around;
That's when the birds disappear, they vanish in thin air,
And I get cackle-bent and egg-bound.

I wish I could paint with brush and easel, but to these birds I'm a weasel,
I've wanted yellow moons in a white sky to be found,
Oh, I scream, I moan and pray, God! Just get me some eggs today,
Or I'll get cackle-bent and egg-bound.

Right enough, about sundown, I'm back in my shack, my mind unhinged,
Not an egg did I see, fall to the floor and roll around,
Just another eggless day! On the floor, face-down to God I pray,
'Cause I'm cackle-bent, and egg-bound.

I toss and turn at night, awake to see a buzzard(1) on my right,
Another on the left. My bed's gone to straw, and my mind's unbound,
Tis' my last eggless day, I'm going in the ground today to stay,
And I'll always be cackle-bent, and egg-bound.

Yeah, my chickens planted me deep down in the ground.
Note 1) a term for a large, overstuffed, chock-full-o'-eggs chicken.
