Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

The legend lived on from 1918 on down
Of the big boy they call "The Bambino"
Red Sox, it was thought, were accursed and could not
Win the prize of October's Series-show

With a load of contracts twenty-six billion bucks stacked
Yankees' Steinbrenner's wallet's not empty
His overpaid crew was a bone to be chewed
When the games of October left Fenway

The Yankees' blitzkrieg in the American League
Was a force 'gainst which most teams had no chance
As the big egos go, theirs was bigger than most
With a crew and an owner well-financed

Concluding three games with the Sox all but tamed
The Red Sox picked up two games in Boston
They went back to New York, where they'd soon pop the cork
'Cause old Boston's the last town they lost in

At first the fans screamed for their pin-striper team
And the crowd was sure they'd be winning
But soon they all knew, as the Yankees did too,
'Twas their doom to lose in extra innings

The Red Sox played great, fought back to win four straight,
In the games of October's fall classic
The World Series came, with Babe's curse to blame,
For no Sox wins since days called Jurassic

That source of Sox' dread, the Babe's Ghost reared his head, sayin'
"Fellas, it's been fun to hurt ya."
From heaven's grandstand, the Babe's Ghost waved his hand, he said
"Fellas, it's too long I've cursed ya."

The Cardinals, in vain, fought with what strength remained,
Giving every last ounce, pound, and kilo
But later that night, in the lunar eclipse light,
Came the end of the curse of Bambino

Is anyone here still alive from that year
When the Red Sox last won the World Series?
The pundits still bet they'd have beaten the Mets
If Bill Buckner'd blocked that ball with his knees

They might have slipped up or they might have just died
They might have choked deep and been slaughtered
But now what remains are the faces and the names
Of a Red Sox World Champion roster

Fenway Park's old, endearingly so
With her Green Monster and foul-pole-stanchions
Her bleacher bums scream with a young fan's dreams
A shrine of nostalgia for sportsmen

And up to the show, the Paw-Sox will go
Taking what the Red Sox can give 'em
And with draft-picks and trades, ever-better teams are made
For the games of October they've striven

In a charming old church in Boston they prayed
Giving thanks 'neath rose-petal-shaped windows
The church bell chimed 'til it rang eighty-six times
For the end of the curse of Bambino

The legend lives on from 2004 on down
Of the Red Sox' victorious mission
Superior they are, never more to be barred
From World Series wins by superstition!

I don't really follow baseball, but this was so well-written! :) 5's

I have no idea what most of this was about, but I love a well-writ "Edmund Fitzgerald" parody...and this was one of 'em...555

Johnny D on Johnny D and the boys. Fine summation.

a magnificent poetic saga...5s

(Expletive deleted)... but the parody is great. As the back page of today's New York Daily News says, "SEE YOU IN 2090."
airfarcewon - October 28, 2004 - Report this comment
Good story and rhymes...looks like it was a lot of work...good job
John Jenkins - October 28, 2004 - Report this comment
Very well done, Johnny D. Was that an intentional pun when you used "slaughtered," since Enos Slaughter was a major reason the Red Sox did not win the 1946 World Series, scoring the winning run for the Cardinals in the 7th game (scoring from first base on a single)?
Johnny D - October 28, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks very much Adagio, Kristof, Stuart, John, Alvin, Michael, airfarcewon, and JJ. John Jenkins --- I wish I could claim that I had cleverly planned that wordplay as an intentional pun, but it was entirely a happy coincidence...thanks for pointing it out!
Peregrin - October 28, 2004 - Report this comment
Well done Johnny, although it doesn't surprise me that your parody had 'sox' as it's underlying theme! heh heh
Johnny D - October 28, 2004 - Report this comment
Heh heh, thanks Peregrin, I'm just sneakin' 'round the 'sox' ban! ;-)

Well done, Johnny. You are the king of Edmund Fitzgerald parodies.

Thanks very much, mac. "We" are very pleased with your comment! ;-)

Fav line:

For no Sox wins since days called Jurassic

Well penned, all of it. Amazing. Here's 5 extra innings for you to extend your season. And what ban on 'sox'? heh heh.
Johnny D - October 31, 2004 - Report this comment
Thank you, Guy! Yep, now that the Red Sox are no longer banned from winning the World Series, the only ban we have to contend with is the one that keeps the (past tense of "to read") Read Sex banned from the Word Series.

Just saw this as an entry in the "Sports parody" contest - missed it the first time around. Nice job JD - even more enjoyable because this Mets fan hates the Yankees. However, in an effort to demonstrate brotherhood to my fellow NYC'ers - every time I see tape of Mookie Wilson at bat, I find myself saying out loud - "hit it to Buckner, Mookie, hit it to Buckner."

(SPORTS COMP) "Giving every last ounce, pound, and kilo" was a phrase that I for some reason liked very much. I'm a fan of the use-three-examples rule so maybe that's why.

(Sports Comp) 5s from this brokenhearted Yankees fan.

(Sports) I really need to download the original so I can envision the 58 parodies to this song. Well written, and I'll be sure to learn the song before voting.

Jeff, you're the Oriole fan, right? Let's see... The legend lives on from old Maryland on down, from the Stadium known as Memorial... A fastball to Frank, and the ball he did crank, while Brooks gave a third baseman's tutorial... With a load barbecued, those 300 pounds glued to the infield at first base, Boog Powell. The big boy did swing at the leather-hide thing and American League pitchers howled... Of course, I already did "The Wreck of the Edgar Martinez" for those overrated 2001 Mariners.

I'm always impressed by parodies of the longer songs, especially when the pacing is maintained all the way through.

(Sports) it probably could've been funnier but otherwise a brilliant job on a ridiculously long song. 545

It was definitely fun to re-visit the Jurassic line and all of the clever rhyming in this tribute to the memorable 2004 playoffs.

(Sports) See above comments. And it's still worth 5 runs 5 hits and 5 errors.

I actually thought about doing "The Hex of the Red Sox from Boston" when they won it, but I decided someone else would be far more qualified to do it. I'm glad I was right. Very good Johnny.

(ABC3E) I remember your parody recording of this OS, and not sounding too much like Gordon Lightfoot isn't a bad thing, heh heh. Very well-written, as always, and performed for a very worthy cause. I'm glad I got all the references; most sports-related parodies lose me there. 555.

A few pacing errors, but the song itself is a home run. Hate to tell you this, but I'm a Cardinals fan who still has fond memories of 1982. -- MM
