"A Lyric, Inane"

Parody Written by:

Merry & Pippin

The Lyrics

With the news of the imminent shutdown of submissions, I (Pippin) thought I had better pull my thumb out and get these into cyberspace while there was still time. I had been waiting for Merry to leave work and start doing parodies again, but this ship is sailing before hers. So, this is one of a number of submissions over the next few days that have been sitting in the vault - most for over 10 years.

After we wrote this, we realised that the line in question in this song had already been covered in parodies - which is partly why we didn't submit it at the time. But as we had so much fun 'improving' their lyrics - here it is anyway.

Original song on YouTube.
Record’s first play was concerning
I was listening with my wife
Sung three mans (no birds) ‘bout rocks and things
Words of sand and hills, they singed
The first thing I thought: “Song’s alright, it’s a buzz”
But a line – did astound!
The HEAT was HOT? Man, that line: decry
Ugh, that lyric should be drowned…

Amer’ca hit pay dirt with their lyric, inane
Was not good, that line – should not have deigned
Made my head hurt, truly dismembered my brain
So, we’ll change - rest - of - song - to obvious bane
Blah, blah – blah-a blub blah blah…

After two days (that’s one more than one)
My skin (my ‘dermis) burned red
After three days (that’s TWO more than one)
I was looking out through eyes in head
And our story as told sees a river whose mode
Fade to sand (it shrinked, till brown bread)

You see this tune we will sub-vert with our lyrical stain:
It feels good, cos our rhyme’s not constrained
Song of desert: you can assign all the blame
On Am-er-i-ca: for their lyric, mundane
Blah, blah - blah-a blub blah blah…

After nine days (three less than four by three)
(Forty-seven from cinquante-six)
Sing of ob-vi-ous whilst mocking things
Yeah, get ‘sand’ and ‘hills’ – but ‘rings’?
The ocean, sure, it’s pleasant but that ring thing confounds
As do certainly flies that buzz
Endure no pity: fly’s athwart on the ground
But the swatter will leave some muss

You see, they’re bleedingly obvious, those lyrics, inane
Dan or Dewey or Ger-ry to blame?
Writing inert, you can cement-a your fame
'Cause it’s lots - of - fun writing lyrics, arcane…

Blah, blah - blah-a blub blah blah...
