I Loved That Barn

It had stanchions
For the mooers.
Pig pens for the rooters.
She had puppies
In the Fifties
On the ledge where we'd watch Daddy.
Now I yearn to hear them creak: those double doors.
I loved that barn.

We threw cow pies
At the rafters.
Broke a pitchfork; brushed the drafthorse.
It had grain bins.
Had stables.
Birds nesting in lofty gables.
A ladder to the mow to flee from harm.
Mmm..I loved that barn.

I loved that barn.
My kind of place.
Rain upon the tin roof put a big smile on my face.
The weathervane.
Cathedral beams.
Mmmm...I loved that barn.

It had storage,
Way down below,
For the stuff that made crops grow.
It had windows, lots of sunshine
Dancing on a winter hay bale's cut twine.
And we snuck our first beer by its mortared stone.
I loved that barn..Yes, I did.

I liked my tractor.
I liked our pond.
I liked to work out in the garden.
And of our outhouse I was fond (not really).

But I loved that barn.
My kind of place.
Just twirlin' around on the threshin' floor put a smile upon my face.
The cornmeal chute.
Even flies in June.
Mmmm...I loved that barn.
Mmmm...I loved that old barn.
